Teck Resources Limited

Teck

Teck Resources Limited is a Canadian mining company headquartered at Suite 3300, Bentall 5, 550 Burrard Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, and one of the few listed producers of scale built primarily on copper and zinc rather than bulk commodities. Founded in 1913, it employs about 7,600 people and reported FY2025 revenue of CAD 10.756 billion (USD 7.683 billion), net income of CAD 1.401 billion, operating income of CAD 2.248 billion and total assets of CAD 45.436 billion. Its Class A and Class B common shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange as TECK.A and TECK.B and its shares also list on the New York Stock Exchange as TECK, with a market capitalization of roughly USD 31.71 billion at a share price of CAD 89.18. Following the July 2024 divestiture of its 77% interest in Elk Valley Resources to Glencore, Teck operates as a pure-play energy transition metals producer: copper contributed an estimated 62% of FY2025 revenue and zinc 38%, supported by four producing copper mines in the Americas, the Red Dog zinc-lead mine in Alaska and the Trail smelting and refining complex in British Columbia.

Strengths: Teck sits in the second quartile of the global copper C1 cost curve at USD 1.98 per pound and in the first quartile of the mined zinc cost curve at USD 1,190 per tonne, leaving margin room that single-asset copper producers rarely enjoy. Its portfolio mixes long-life, low-strip operations such as Highland Valley Copper, whose sanctioned mine life now runs to 2046 at an average 132 ktpa, and a 22.5% interest in Antamina with an extension to 2036, with the volume optionality of Quebrada Blanca, where attributable copper output reached 453.5 kt in 2025 and is guided to 490-560 kt for FY2026. Reserve inventory of 16.2 Mt of contained copper at 0.48% Cu over 25 years and 5.4 Mt of contained zinc at 11.8% Zn over 11 years, combined with a policy of not hedging core output, keeps shareholders fully exposed to metal price upside.

Weaknesses: Earnings rest on two exchange-quoted commodities with no hedging cushion, so a CAD 2.062 billion annual capital programme must be funded from cash flow that moves with LME prices; operating income of negative CAD 9 million in FY2024 against CAD 6.986 billion in FY2022 shows the amplitude of that swing. Quebrada Blanca carries both operating and jurisdictional risk, since Teck holds 60% alongside Sumitomo Metal Mining, Sumitomo Corporation and Codelco in Chile, and any further delay in reaching nameplate throughput would defer the volume growth the equity case depends on. The pending merger of equals with Anglo American, approved by shareholders of both companies on 10 December 2025 and still awaiting final regulatory clearances, adds transaction risk, while the dual-class structure, with Class A shares carrying 100 votes until the May 2029 sunset, keeps control tightly held.

Industry Position

Copper clears through two linked markets: the LME cash settlement for refined metal and a concentrate market in which miners pay smelters treatment and refining charges. Because Chinese smelting capacity has grown faster than mine supply, those charges have been unstable, and producers with long-life, low-strip ore bodies and their own marketing desks keep a larger share of the final metal value. Teck's 453.5 kt of attributable copper in 2025 puts it among the mid-cap Western producers, well behind Freeport-McMoRan and Southern Copper, roughly comparable with Antofagasta and ahead of First Quantum on a post-divestiture basis.

Zinc is a smaller and more concentrated market, with mine supply resting on a handful of assets and treatment charges moving sharply whenever concentrate tightens. Red Dog gives Teck a first-quartile position on the mined zinc cost curve and a meaningful share of Western concentrate supply, which matters to Asian smelters that have few alternatives outside Kazakhstan and Peru.

The two commodities behave differently through the cycle. Copper tracks grid investment, electrification and construction; zinc tracks galvanizing and steel output. Holding both smooths revenue but does not remove exposure to industrial demand, and neither market offers pricing power, since both are exchange-quoted and Teck is a price taker on every tonne it sells.

Competitive Advantages

The copper C1 cash cost of USD 1.98 per pound places Teck in the second quartile globally, supported by by-product credits at Antamina and Quebrada Blanca and by low strip ratios at Highland Valley Copper. That position matters most in the bottom of the cycle, when higher-cost peers cut guidance and Teck can keep grading and stripping programmes intact.

Asset quality is anchored in reserve reports rather than promotional language: 16.2 Mt of contained copper at 0.48% Cu with a 25-year reserve life, and 5.4 Mt of contained zinc at 11.8% Zn with an 11-year life. The Highland Valley extension to 2046 at an average 132 ktpa turns a mature mine into a long-duration asset, while Antamina's extension to 2036 protects a low-cost copper-zinc credit that few peers can replicate.

Partnership structure spreads both capital and political risk. Antamina is held with BHP, Glencore and Mitsubishi; Quebrada Blanca is 60% Teck with Sumitomo Metal Mining, Sumitomo Corporation and Codelco alongside. For a company of this size, having a state-owned Chilean partner on the largest growth project is an advantage in permitting and community relations, not merely a financing arrangement.

Refusing to hedge core copper and zinc output is itself a competitive choice. Every cent on the copper price and every dollar on the zinc price reaches earnings rather than a hedge counterparty, which is why Teck outperforms hedged peers in rising markets and underperforms them in falling ones, and why its equity is treated by investors as a leveraged expression of the copper price.

Strategic Expansion

Quebrada Blanca is the centre of the growth case. The operation produced 55.4 kt of copper in Q4 2025 and is being pushed toward steady-state throughput and recovery, with FY2026 attributable guidance of 490-560 kt that depends on how quickly nameplate is reached rather than on any new capital decision.

Capital is directed to brownfield life extension rather than new jurisdictions: Highland Valley to 2046, Antamina to 2036, and sustaining work at Carmen de Andacollo and Trail, funded from FY2025 total capital cash outflows of CAD 2.062 billion that included CAD 224 million of capitalized stripping. The development pipeline in Mexico, Peru, Chile and Canada sits behind these commitments in the queue.

The announced merger of equals with Anglo American, approved by both shareholder bases on 10 December 2025 and awaiting final regulatory clearances, would create Anglo Teck plc and combine the Americas copper base with a larger diversified portfolio. Execution and clearance conditions, not the industrial logic, are the variables that will decide whether the combination adds value.

The share register is also on a timetable. Class A shares carrying 100 votes convert into Class B shares on 12 May 2029 under the six-year sunset approved in 2023, a change that would simplify the capital structure and could widen index eligibility, while China Investment Corporation's 10.1% holding and BlackRock's 6.8% stake frame the ownership debate in the interim.

Risks & Outlook

Copper and zinc prices dominate the earnings equation, and with no hedging the sensitivity is close to one for one. A sustained copper price near the C1 cost of marginal producers would compress margins at Quebrada Blanca and Highland Valley at the same time as the capital programme continues, which is the scenario that matters most for free cash flow.

Jurisdictional exposure is distributed rather than concentrated: Chile for Quebrada Blanca and Carmen de Andacollo, Peru for Antamina, Alaska for Red Dog and British Columbia for Highland Valley and Trail. No single permit decision can halt the group, but Chilean water and tailings conditions and Alaskan land access remain the two files to watch, and a merger adds multi-jurisdiction clearance risk on top.

Over the next one to two years the central question is whether Quebrada Blanca reaches nameplate and holds it. If guidance of 490-560 kt is delivered, unit costs should fall and cash flow should cover the capital programme; if ramp-up slips again, the equity case leans on a merger rather than on operating delivery, and the second-quartile cost position would be tested by a softer price environment.

The profile closes with a VerityRank Score of 84/100.
